Biographical Sketch
A native Toledoan, John N. Grigsby knew as a child that he wanted to become a newspaper reporter when he grew up. One of his first jobs was selling magazines to members of The Blade staff and delivering the newspaper. He is quoted as saying âI was entranced by the odor of newsprint and ink and by the scurrying activity as everyone fought to meet deadlines.â His dream became a reality when he was hired by The Blade on June 10, 1936 just one day after graduating from the University of Toledo. His first official story as a staff member was to write about his own college commencement. As a student, John had worked periodically during vacations or was called in for âbreakingâ stories like the 1934 Electric Auto-Lite strike. He was also editor-in-chief of the Campus Collegian.
He married Margaret Ann Hartman, whom he met via the telephone when she worked in Flower Hospitalâs admitting office and he was covering the police beat. Both are University of Toledo alumni. In 1962, they moved to the Trilby area of Washington Township to raise their three children John (A.), Rick, and Gail.
His job was definitely a family affair; they all lived it. It wasnât the least bit unusual for John to load the family into the car while he chased fires for an upcoming story. He âliked to be in the middle of things,â and fire-chasing was his favorite story type. Hence he was affectionately dubbed the âdisaster man.â
During Grigsbyâs career at The Blade, he was a state editor, a suburban editor and an assistant city editor. His stories encompassed an endless array of topics: natural disasters, national conventions, radio and movie pages, federal and labor beats, and glimpses of Toledoâs past featured in âSesqui-Spots.â
He was one of eight men instrumental in forming the Area Cooperation Committee in 1962. These individuals represented the townships, municipalities, and county governments and their purpose was twofold. First, the committee wanted to create new municipal courts and uniformity in administration of justice. Secondly, they wanted to overcome the prevalent âhate Toledoâ attitude. The Area Cooperation Committee became the precursor to the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments.
Another milestone in John Grigsbyâs career was the Penta-County Vocational Program he helped establish on the site of the old Rossford Army Depot. He suggested to the late Ross Enright, Perrysburg police chief that a professional institute be built at Penta-County for the training of law enforcement officers. The program was developed by Mr. Enright (although it was Johnâs âbrainchildâ) and began in March 1966. Penta became a forerunner of vocational programs throughout Ohio and gained national notoriety. As the school expanded, seventeen separate school districts merged to form Penta-County Vocational High School and Technical College. Later, the technical college took a separate entity and became Owens Technical College.
In 1989, he retired from The Blade news staff after fifty-three years, although he continued to write an occasional article until 1997 (See âMinnesota Town Got its Start in Toledo,â March 30, 1997). He died on January 13, 2011.
Scope and Content Note
This collection is divided into four series: Correspondence, Subject Files, Printed Material and Photographs. The Correspondence series is small and consists of just one folder. Contained within are letters to John Grigsby and other journalists at The Blade with ideas for forthcoming features. Also included is a thank you note and pieces of Toledo history.
The Subject Files cover an array of topics. Some of the information is general and some quite specific from Crime and Various Typescripts to Howard Copland and The Area Cooperation Committee. Inside individual folders are newspaper clippings, John Grigsbyâs typescripts, photographs, programs and maps.
Black and white photographs comprise the greater part of the Photograph series. Individual folders entitled Buildings, Houses, Industry, Public Transportation, People, Streets, Trains and Boats describe folder contents. The small postcard collection from 1906-1911 and 1914 is both black and white and color. The tinted photos of Collingwood Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Huebner Toledo Breweries Co., St. Vincent Hospital and Union Passenger Station are just a few of the landmarks represented in the collection. Toledo Aerials are what the name implies; assorted aerial views of the city including Lincolnshire (near Secor and Central), Toledo Express Airport, Scott Park Pool and Rosary Cathedral. Finally, the last folder in this series, Various, contains pictures from the first airmail in Toledo, June 3, 1928 and the Speedway roller coaster at Walbridge Park in the mid 1930âs.
Finally, within Printed Material are the two subseries âNewspaper Clippings by John Grigsbyâ and âPłÜČú±ôŸ±łŠČčłÙŸ±ŽÇČÔČőâ.&ČÔČúČő±è; Folder titles indicate where the newspaper articles appeared i.e., The Toledo Blade Pictorial: 1949-1960, The Sunday Magazine: 1965-1974, The Toledo Magazine: 1978-1997 or The (Toledo) Blade: 1942-1995. The versatility of Mr. Grigsbyâs writing career is evidenced by the voluminous assortment of newspaper articles he produced throughout his fifty-three years as a journalist with The Blade. The subseries Publications is a conglomeration of historical calendars, newsletters and journals, The Ohio Fire Chiefs 1987 Roster, programs, brochures, pamphlets and souvenir books.
